黒文字(Kuromoji) is a deciduous shrub of the camphoraceae family. When the leaves and branches are rubbed, they give off a pleasant citrus aroma. For this reason, it has long been used as a material for chopsticks and toothpicks. Even today, toothpicks used for receiving Japanese sweets at tea ceremonies are called "kuromonji. Because of its strong sterilizing effect, it was also used as a substitute for toothbrushes in the Edo period (1603-1867).
