This paulownia box contains spicebush toothpicks and has ”金千両“ (”Kinsenryo,“ a thousand gold coins) handwritten on it in Japanese ink. ”両“ (”ryo“) is an old Japanese currency, and 千両箱 (”Senryobako“) was used to store a lot of ryo coins, so it is a symbol of prosperity.

[ Nihonbashi Saruya ]
The first is Nihonbashi Saruya, a toothpick specialty store in Nihonbashi.
Founded in the Hoei era (1704-1868), this long-established shop has been in business for 300 years since the Edo era (1603-1868).
Using the Kuromoji tree, they sell more than 20 kinds of toothpicks of different lengths and thicknesses.
Customers who have used our toothpicks say, "Once you use this one, you will never go back to other toothpicks.
The "Jogaku toothpicks" are made with a special technique that requires a great deal of skill. The company is said to have only one current craftsman, who is a master of his craft.
